Understanding Collateral Protection Insurance (CPI)
Collateral Protection Insurance (CPI) may be added when the insurance coverage required by your loan agreement cannot be verified. CPI helps protect the collateral securing the loan and is added at the member’s expense.
Already Have Insurance?
If you currently maintain the required insurance coverage, submit proof of insurance as soon as possible.
Once acceptable coverage is confirmed, any applicable CPI coverage may be cancelled and eligible premium credits may be applied to your loan.
Important Things to Know About CPI
CPI is not the same as your personal insurance policy.
✅ Protects the collateral securing the loan
✅ Provides physical damage coverage
❌ Does not provide liability coverage
❌ Does not provide medical coverage
❌ Does not replace insurance required by state law
❌ May cost more than insurance purchased directly through your insurance company

Collateral Protection Insurance (CPI) will be added to your loan if we cannot verify that your vehicle has the required comprehensive and collision insurance coverage.
If proof of insurance is not provided, CPI will be added to your loan at your expense. CPI protects the vehicle securing your loan but does not replace your personal auto insurance policy.
Important Information About CPI
- Covers physical damage only (comprehensive and collision)
- Does not include liability, medical, or property damage coverage
- 12-month policy term
- $250 deductible
- May cost more than personal auto insurance
- Can be canceled upon receipt of acceptable proof of insurance
If acceptable insurance coverage is provided, any applicable CPI coverage may be cancelled and eligible premium credits may be applied to your loan.
Submit your updated insurance information as soon as possible. The Insurance Service Center can review your policy and help verify coverage.
In some situations, CPI premiums may be added when required insurance information is not on file. If you currently maintain insurance coverage, submitting proof of insurance may help resolve the issue.
